Full Session Description


This Classroom Instruction That Works "Cool Tools" session focuses on how we can integrate Web 2.0 tools with research-based effective instructional practices identified by Marzano's meta-research. Come explore tools that support effective instruction while making learning fun, engaging, and empoering for all students. We will explore one or two web-based tools for each "category" of CITW and classroom examples will be provided for each tool.

Classroom Instruction That Works is a collection of effective strategies culled from a meta-analysis of decades of research on what works in classrooms to improve student learning and increase student achievement. This meta-analysis was conducted by Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering, and Jane E. Pollock. They combined these effective strategies into nine broad categories:

My personal "Swiss Army Knife" of Digital Tools:
- Wikispaces
- Google Docs/Apps
- Evernote
- Dropbox

All of my "Swiss Army Knife" tools are accessible on my laptop, iPad, and iPhone.

Wikispaces and Google Docs allow me to create and share collaborative content with others.
Evernote is my "digital Trapper Keeper" (and when I say that I see the image of the original Trapper Keeper in my mind -- showing my age!) Here's a great Evernote Guide for Educators.
Dropbox is simply one more essential tool for saving and sharing docs across all of my devices - I'm starting to download email attachments directly into Dropbox now (UPDATE: I now use both Dropbox and Google Drive for clous storage and access.)

Google Docs and iPad/iPhone -- no, editing is not consistent but I can do it sometimes. I just heard today that the "issue" should be fixed by the end of this year -- so hang in there!
